Insurance Premium Fraud
A-1 Staffing Gregg Leo Curwick (Sentence: 12 Months, Restitution/Fines/Penalties/Settlements Paid: $68,290)
Action Date: March 18, 2005
Location: Rancho Cucamonga, CA
On March 18, 2005, Gregg Leo Curwick of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, was sentenced for workers’ compensation insurance fraud to one year in jail, fined $4,420, and ordered to make restitution payments to 15 former business clients and the State Compensation Insurance Fund (“SCIF”) in the amount of $63,870.
According to the California Department of Insurance, Curwick become the co-owner of A-1 Staffing in February 2003. Curwick managed two other temporary employment businesses from 2001 through 2002. In November of 2003, Curwick produced two fictitious workers’ compensation coverage certificates to construction business clients claiming that A-1 Staffing employees were covered by workers’ compensation insurance. However, A-1 Staffing’s workers’ compensation policy was cancelled in October 2003. It was also learned that Curwick’s other temporary employment businesses ended operations owing SCIF approximately $33,000.
According to investigators, Curwick kept the monies paid by A-1 Staffing’s clients for workers’ compensation insurance premiums and employee income taxes. Curwick also underreported the monthly payroll and job classifications of A-1 Staffing to the SCIF. By doing so, Curwick substantially lowered A-1 Staffing’s workers’ compensation premium payments. |
